49TH PORT ANTONIO INT’L MARLIN TOURNAMENT- This year’s Sir Henry Morgan Angling Association’s tournament will unfold at the Old Marina in Port Antonio from Oct. 20-27 with four days of intense fishing. Among the very oldest tournaments in the Caribbean, the Port Antonio event kicked off in 1959 from what was known then as the Titchfield Hotel Dock adjacent to where the Errol Flynn Marina is presently located. It then moved to the old railway jetty across from the marina and operated as pretty much of a “tent city” in the initial years until the present clubhouse was constructed. With the exception of 1988 when Hurricane Gilbert eliminated all the docks at Port Antonio and in the 1978-82 period with the Michael Manley government was wooing Fidel Castro’s Cuba and the USA was involved in destabilisation of his Jamaica government, the tournament has been continuous. Details on the tournament can be obtained from Ron duQuesnay at 1876-927-0145 or 1876-909-8818 [email protected] or check their website at www.jamaicasportfishing.com
WHAT DO YOU PAY FOR CLEARING IN? We frequently hear horror stories about excessive charges for clearing customs, immigration and quarantine at various locations on other islands in the Caribbean; some totalling as much as USD$200.00! What do we charge for routine clearances during regular business hours? How about NADA? Is this some new gimmick we’ve come up with to lure customers to our marina? This policy has been in practice for many years here and we are proud to say our entry/exit officials are among the most courteous you can find.
WILL JAMAICA RULE 2012 OLYMPICS? – The Olympics in the UK get underway July 27 and Jamaican’s are riding a high of expectations for massive amounts of gold to return to the Caribbean. Foremost, but far from the least, is Usain Bolt’s chances to capture both gold and new records in the 100m and 200m. Usain attributes his track prowess to a long-time diet or yams and goat’s head curry from his childhood in Jamaica’s Trelawny. This writer distinctly remembers goat’s head curry as an incentive to make the fastest possible dash to the men’s room!
‘WAVES JAMAICA’ TO HIT PORTLAND OCT. 13-15 National Heroe’s Weekend in Portland will be filled with three days of aquatic events ranging from Errol Flynn Marina in the west and continuing to Long Bay in the east. The event will include a all-comer’s swim to Navy Island, beach volleyball, water polo, surfing, and synchronized swimming events plus reggae and gospel concerts. A seafood festival and beach party will also be included. Organizer of the event is Marjorie Scott Anderson 1876-316-1057 [email protected] Some sponsorship opportunities remain available. The event proceeds benefit Jamaica’s Down’s Syndrome Foundation.
SEVERAL PORT PROPERTIES AVAILABLE TO LEASE- The Errol Flynn Marina’s boatyard is available to lease in addition to some other prime locations in Port Antonio’s West Harbour. The boatyard is pretty much a turnkey operation with a modern Marine Travelift 100BFM (100 metric tonnes) straddle lift, fully paved yard, five specialty craft shops, marine chandlery and office facilities ready to move into. Long term leasing arrangements will be considered. For details, contact Dale B. Westin, marina general manager at 1876-477-6914 or email to [email protected]
A CLEANER NAVY ISLAND NOW AWAITS VISITORS- The Great House has had nearly 100 per cent of the debris removed, the beach is free of broken glass and garbage and the island’s appearance is 100 per cent improved thanks to community volunteer efforts. There is presently no regular boat service to the legendary Errol Flynn Island. However, several operators have expressed interest in possibly starting tours to the 64 acre island. “JERK WEEKEND” STARTS FRIDAY, JUNE 29- The Portland jerk weekend will begin on Friday , June 29, with a Port Antonio Fashion Night Out, as organisers have decided to up the tempo and to provide patrons with a taste and experience of the parish's splendour and activities. The Portland Best Dressed Chicken Festival is a Jamaica 50th official celebratory event, and the intent is to showcase Portland. The three-day event will begin with a Twenty20 cricket match at Folly Oval on June 29, along with a drama competition involving a number of schools, followed by a Jerk Fashion Night Out. Friday's event will climax with a massive street dance. On Saturday, June 30, persons will be afforded the opportunity of discovering the parish and its beauty, including visits to the various attraction sites such as Rio Grande rafting, Blue Lagoon, Reach Falls, and Sommerset Falls. She pointed out that Jamaica Broilers, through its brand Best Dressed Chicken and Reggae Jammin, has been associated with the Portland Jerk Festival for more than 10 years. "This year, we have become title sponsor. This event captures an audience of more than 20,000 patrons from home and abroad to experience a true Jamaican family oriented event. We fully endorse this Jamaica 50th Best Dressed Chicken Portland Jerk Festival." A Maroon village will also be on display, which will showcase a bit of Jamaica's history, food, and other cultural practices. There will also be a cultural village, a kiddies' village and other local acts. This year, patrons can expect a wide variety of foods, with the addition of conch, mutton, shrimp and lobster, all cooked in traditional authentic jerk sauce. Vegetarian meals will also be available. Tickets for the Sunday festival are $1300.00 JAD at the door and $1,000.00 presold. The festival is held at the Folly Cricket Oval, just east of Port Antonio on the coastal road.
