One Love One Step Walk across Jamaica
Walking to celebrate and discover the abundant ecology, meet and hear the stories from a people that created a nation with a philosophy of ‘Out of Many One People’ and ‘One Love’. To also explore the creativity of this extraordinary Island. Jamaica’s journey from slavery and economic exploitation has created a resilient and resourceful people, many of whom are notable on the world stage but now the Jamaican people face one of their biggest challenges yet ... Climate Change.
There is a special quality to the nature of Jamaica, which is unique within the Caribbean, a small Island with enormous biodiversity. Many endemic creatures live on the Island and anything grows in the rich and diverse soils. This needs recognition, consideration and then action to protect it from exploitation. Jamaica was once built on a foundation of ONE LOVE!.
BUT has this now become nothing more than a brand? We want to explore this through walk, talk and stories, capturing the true currency of Jamaica to map the future.
I believe that the future success of this BIG little Island is rooted in the that is Jamaica’s heritage. Many specialized herbs with healing and medicinal properties grow easily and abundantly here; including Ganja, Ginger, Noni, Okra , Moringa, Cocoa, Coffee and Sorrel to name but a few .
We will raise awareness of the issues of climate change, habitat degradation and human interaction with the environment, with the hope to reinforce the need for a law to end ecocide and mitigate against these critical issues; the effect of which are felt by so many emerging economies and small island
States and whose delicate ecosystems often lie in the balance. We will be discussing and demonstrating new opportunities and solutions that are presented in the face of such adversity.
We will walk to communities and share our skills, gather stories, spend the night and feel the pulse of this nation. We will film this journey and we will share this film and gathered knowledge with all who we meet.
We want schools, university students, community organizations, churches and all members of society to join us. We invite people from other parts of the world to support us and walk with us, here or there. Walk for a few days or the whole three weeks! We plan to stay amongst communities in community centers, churches and schools. Sharing our skills, gathering tales and understanding this beautiful Island.
